Dowry system is a curse in our social life. This system is very harmful to the society. Many innocent women fall victim to dowry system and their lives become miserable. This dowry system has been prevalent for many years among the Hindus. The Hindu women cannot inherit their paternal property. That is why, cash money, various ornaments, goods, dresses, etc. are given in their marriage ceremony. This evil tradition is established in Muslim society day by day. Many men marry women for the greed of their property and if they are unable to get these, they torture women. Many times, as a consequent of this, the girls take the way of suicide or they are killed by their unscrupulous husbands or others. There are some women who go back to their father’s home forever. There is no doubt about the necessity of removing dowry system. To abolish this system govt. has enacted strict laws. Yet dowry system is continuing and the women are suffering. We have to try to put an end to this system. We should protect women from the curse of dowry and everybody, both male and female, of the society should be conscious in this matter.

Dowry means property or money brought by a bride to her husband when they marry. Usually in our society female children are considered inferior to male children. They are thought to be of no use to the family. So, during marriage ceremony a section of greedy people claim much wealth or money from the guardians of the brides. The poor and illiterate girls mainly become the victims of dowry. If the guardians fail to fulfil the demand of their bridegroom, they misbehave with their wives and sometimes torture them seriously. As a result many of them get divorced or commit suicide or are killed by their husbands. This system has affected our whole society. At present a father cannot think of the marriage of his daughter without giving dowry to the bridegroom. I am dead against this evil system of the society. This evil system should be uprooted from the society immediately. This social curse can be eliminated by changing the outlook of the people especially the male members of the society and by taking strict legal measures against the persons who take dowry.
