The initiative for issuing national ID card in Bangladesh came as a move to use them as voter identity cards for holding fair elections. Now the national ID card is accepted as an authentic document for the identification of its holders. One can produce the national ID card while opening a bank account or gaining a passport. However, the national ID card issued by the government of Bangladesh is still accepted within the country. It is not considered an acceptable means of identification in international arena. One has to produce the passport as the only acceptable form of identity for international business or travelling purposes. One reason behind this is the national ID card is not produced following a sound scientific process as it is done in many developed countries. Since the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001, many countries have discussed issuing national identity cards as a way to distinguish terrorists from the law-abiding population. This call for issuing a smart digitized ID card that uses one or more biometric techniques such as iris or fingerprint recognition to confirm the identity of a card holder. Bangladesh government should come forward to include these smart technological devices in its national ID card to make it globally accepted.
